Last weekend was the second National Series event in Sheffield, hosted by SoYo Polo Co. The venue was superb (a tournament in conjunction with Cliff Hanger festival) and we were surrounded by nature with a good pub nearby.
The format was round robin and with only 12 teams in attendance it made for an awesome day of play a game, ref a game, have a game off kind of setup. There were hour-long breaks for Beginner’s Polo every so often which is a great way to bring new players to the sport whilst also giving the players a chance to spend an hour splashing around in a Kayak (a sinking one for good measure), great fun.
After a night of Guinness and tequila drinking, Spring Break had a few more games of Round Robin games on day two before a top 4 playoff (two semi-finals, a bronze play-off and the final itself).
We managed to stay undefeated all weekend, with a draw to Netto on day one. The final was played against Nice Touch and after 29 minutes of tense polo Ryan scored a golden goal to secure first place, it felt good to claw a few games back against the Nice Touchers (as we got a win against them in the round robin stage too). I think they still have the edge in total games won-to-date, but we now share the top spot for the UK National Series, it should make the next few National Series events pretty interesting!
Thanks to Sheffield (and to our host). We’d also like to say how much we enjoyed playing Hacked Off (a new Bristol team), Andre got MVP and they play some great polo, definitely ones to watch for the future!
Ryan’s new bike is riding extremely well (made by Oak Cycles) and Ryan was top goal scorer, awesome.
